The History of CUPE 4600

Throughout the 1970s, Carleton University failed to treat its student assistants with proper respect. There were large pay discrepancies between and within departments, various work terms, arbitrary hirings and firings, and for graduate students, a great need to distinguish between wages and scholarship money. Carleton's Dean of Graduate Studies at the time, Professor Paquette, called teaching assistants "useful, but not necessary".

Meetings

CUPE 4600 holds from five to ten General Meetings per year, depending on need. During bargaining years there are more frequent meetings. There are also occasionally meetings on a unit basis - that is, TAs meet together and Contract Instructors meet together - to discuss issues of importance to only one unit. For example, each unit bargains separately with Carleton, and each unit decides independently on how/whether to settle, etc.
